From Standing Ashtray to Plant Stand – Upcycling with Chalk Paint
Before: An Old Floor Ashtray
Who would have thought that a discarded solid wood floor ashtray could become a real eye-catcher? The turned wooden stand had a beautiful shape – but its original function was long outdated. Instead of throwing it away, we gave it a second life.
The Transformation: Chalk Paint & Wax
With soft grey chalk paint and grey wax accents, the brown wooden stand was transformed into an elegant cottage piece. Here's how:
- Step 1 – Preparation: Lightly sand the stand with steel wool so the chalk paint adheres well. Wipe off dust.
- Step 2 – Base Coat: Apply a thin coat of grey chalk paint – two coats are often sufficient.
- Step 3 – Drying: Allow 30–60 minutes drying time between coats.
- Step 4 – Wax Finish: Emphasize the contours and grooves with grey furniture wax – this adds depth and an authentic shabby chic look.
- Step 5 – Styling: Place a basket on top, put a plant inside – done!
